Racial equity, diversity, and inclusion (REDI) are increasingly important topics of discussion in institutions but where to begin and how to start operationalizing REDI can be overwhelming. Join this program if you are curious about how to implement REDI in your institution and want to learn how others engage in it from the business, government, nonprofit, and philanthropy sectors. You’ll hear from the alumni of Racial Equity Action Institute (REAI) and take away some tips, tools, and frameworks to help you and your institution make progress.
The NCG Funders for Climate Justice Group is a collaboration with Smart Growth California and the League of California Community Foundations. We invite funders who are interested in or are already funding at the intersection of climate justice and resilience to join us and to share and provide input as we collectively learnand take action on critical climate justice challenges and opportunities. Discussion topics in the group will focus on intersectional issues relating to climate justice, as well as philanthropic and community-based practices and trends relevant to northern California’s 48-county region. We also welcome topical and tactical feedback from funders as we improve this group.
California’s Central San Joaquin Valley is a vast region with 8 counties. It is home to rural, agricultural, poor and working-class communities of color and contains the majority of the state’s prisons. Despite its rich history of organizing and the undeniable impacts of the state’s investment in carceral infrastructure, the Central Valley is overlooked by philanthropy. This region receives the least amount of philanthropic resources for community organizing in the state.
We will explore the ABFE approach to grantmaking with a racial equity lens. ABFE's framework, analysis, and tools provide opportunities for grantmakers to support Black communities, and, more broadly, our greater society. ABFE has created a set of tools that reduce gaps in racial disparities facing Blacks in the United States. By centering systemic anti-Black racism within an intersectional framework through which we understand the social, economic, historical, and cultural dimensions of human life, we can conduct grantmaking practices that address inequities across communities.
The California Criminal Justice Funders Group is an established statewide network of funders and donors that invest in a wide range of systems change. CCJFG engages funders from their current location and perspective and supports them to transform learning into collective action; develop principles that align with the movements to end policing, criminalization, imprisonment and the disinvestment of communities in California; build meaningful relationships with impacted communities; and mobilize and redistribute resources.
In June & July, NCG and the UC Merced Community & Labor Center brought funders,
government, and leading community, work, and labor organizations dedicated to serving
farmworkers and rural communities across California together – both virtually and in the San
Joaquin Valley. These events cast a spotlight on the social and economic impacts of the 2023
floods, while also examining the persistent inequities that rural and farmworker communities
experience.

Through Northern California Grantmakers’ Racial Equity Action Institute (REAI), participants will gain knowledge, lessons, and tools for developing actionable strategies in their institutions to advance racial equity with field experts and each other. One sector on its own cannot solve the challenges of racial inequities. Our cohort learning program connects specialists in racial equity from philanthropy, business, government, and nonprofits. By deepening our relationships and the connectivity of those in our ecosystem who are committed to change and justice, so much is possible.
