Learn More About Oakland

NCG is excited to host our 2024 annual conference in downtown Oakland on the eve of Juneteenth, during Pride month.

If you are not familiar with Oakland’s rich history of movement-building, philanthropy, or various arts and cultural institutions, we invite you to learn more about what makes “the town” so special and pivotal to East Bay philanthropic practice.

Oakland was originally occupied by the Lisjan Ohlone people, prior to Mexican, Spanish and American colonization. Over the course of the 20th century, the town grew to become a Black-majority city. The biggest influx of African Americans occurred during the Second Great Migration during the Jim Crow south era between 1940-1970. Many came to the west coast for economic opportunities during and post-World War II. In 1966, Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale founded the Black Panther Party while they were students at Merritt College, leaving an indelible mark on US history.

Regrettably, a lot has shifted over the last few decades, and many Black families have been displaced through the recession and foreclosure crisis of 2008 and ongoing gentrification forces. However, Oakland remains one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse cities in the nation, lending to its incredible arts, music, and movement infrastructure.

From beautiful Lake Merritt to Redwood Regional Park, there's lots of places to explore in Oakland. Museums, cafes, restaurants, and arts spaces abound; there’s truly something for everyone.
