My first executive director position was with MACLA/Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana in San Jose, CA. The El Paso gunman claimed the mass murder was a "response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas." Many other instances of mass violence in recent years have been driven by racial or ethnic hatred and intolerance, including deadly attacks in Charleston in 2015, Pittsburgh in 2018, Atlanta in 2021, and Buffalo in 2022.
Gun violence is the leading cause of death of children and teens in the United States, having disproportionately impacted BIPOC communities for generations. For far too long, the emphasis on gun violence reduction has focused on easy accessibility to guns without addressing the root causes and demanding direct input from those communities most impacted.
