We're excited to announce the launch of two peer learning exchanges created by Philanthropy CA and the Trust-Based Philanthropy Project! Over the past two years, we've partnered to provide learning opportunities to the philanthropy community across California to support further adoption of trust-based approaches in grantmaking. We're excited to share the next iteration of those efforts.
Philanthropy California (Philanthropy CA) is an initiative of Northern California Grantmakers (NCG), SoCal Grantmakers, and Catalyst of San Diego & Imperial Counties. Our combined membership represents more than 600 foundations, corporate funders, philanthropic individuals and families, giving circles, and government agencies investing billions every year to support communities across the state, the country, and worldwide. This anthology archives and documents the cultural memory of health, healing, care and safety practices led by BIPOC, Queer, Trans, migrant, femme, women, sick and disabled communities; and frames these practices as both an organizing and bridge building tool. Page, Woodland and their collaborators demonstrate the connection between healing justice and abolition—in order to build a world without prisons, policing, and criminalization, we need to develop (and fund) long-term infrastructure for health, healing and collective care and safety led by the community.
As we mark another Black History Month and celebrate Black futures, there is an urgency for us to address the existing divisions in our country and create solutions that move us closer towards our vision of a strong, inclusive, multiracial democracy with Black communities at the center. Some of the barriers we continue to see in communities across the nation include attacks on voting rights, biased immigration policies, blatant displays of white supremacy and white nationalism, and a decline inequitable economic opportunities.
Achieving racial equity and sustaining a viable democracy go hand in hand. NCG defines democracy as the processes, systems, and structures for historically marginalized and underrepresented community members to participate in a political system that fulfills the promise of an equitable multi-racial society. Northern California is a region that can model this approach, ensuring that people of color and other communities historically underrepresented and marginalized in our political process fully engage in the democratic process.
