California Criminal Justice Funders Group Member Meeting: Building Narrative Power

California Criminal Justice Funders Group invites you to an interactive session on investing in the long-term, relational organizing work of narrative power building for transformative community safety.

Narrative power building for transformative community safety is not just about messaging, it is about the organizing work necessary to shift public perception, fuel policy wins, and implement changes that improve the material conditions of the communities most impacted by criminalization and incarceration. As “tough on crime” narrative begins to take root again, this session will examine how narrative power building shifted California away from the tough on crime rhetoric of the 90s and toward transformative youth and criminal justice policies in the 2000s and 2010s.? What lessons can funders learn and apply to our current moment?

Borealis Philanthropy’s Communities Transforming Policing Fund (CTPF) and Spark Justice Fund (SJF) Directors will also share examples of how they have resourced grantees to successfully leverage narrative power to combat criminalization and build lasting infrastructure for movement storytelling. Participants will also engage in a practice session, reflecting on how funders can shift from reactive communications support to proactive, sustained investment in narrative power building for progressive policy changes.
