Funding Strategies to Accelerate Power-building Cohort is a new offering within NCG's Communities of Practice. This cohort is a 4-part learning and collaboration series that will help philanthropic grantmakers sharpen their power-building strategies by engaging in 501c(4) funding and complementary 501c(3) funding. A core premise is that these types of grantmaking strategies (which NCG calls “c4- aligned funding”) can accelerate movement building and systems-change goals, strengthen our democracy, and advance racial equity.

As we find ourselves in increasingly polarizing times, we must embrace the importance of cultural and narrative strategy in both expanding and strengthening our movements. The work of artists – whether it be visual art, theater, or the stories and characters we connect with through our favorite tv shows and films – has historically been viewed as secondary or supplemental to movement infrastructure, rather than as essential to our work. The reality is that when we invest in and integrate strategies that leverage art, stories, and culture as powerful vehicles for change, we expand what is possible.

Our democratic systems are deeply entwined with disaster resilience. On the eve of consequential presidential and local elections, the question of what role democracy plays in disasters, and what role the response to disasters plays in undermining or strengthening democracy, has never been more important. Funders should consider the role a strong and functional democracy plays in the ability for communities to self-determine what resilience to disasters looks like for their communities, have adequate and culturally appropriate resources to respond when disasters occur, and have the power to demand equitable recoveries.

Leveraging the unique perspectives, energy, and visions of young people can transform philanthropy into a more powerful force for change. Across California, funders are stepping out of their traditional roles to deconstruct the power dynamics that exist in philanthropy and utilize participatory approaches that bring together young people and funders to make decisions on grants. As we reimagine what grantmaking can be, learning directly from young people and those involved in the work is crucial in
being able to contribute to the landscape constructively. It informs funders what the vast needs of the ecosystem are and how their work can contribute.
