Arts and culture creates community, celebrates identity and expression, make cities vibrant, and spurs the economy. What is at risk when artists and arts and culture organizations are displaced?

Arts and culture organizations make the region more vibrant, connected, and beautiful. Yet many smaller, grassroots organizations, especially those that reflect and lift up historically marginalized communities, are often overlooked or operate under the radar of those they are meant to represent.

As we find ourselves in increasingly polarizing times, we must embrace the importance of cultural and narrative strategy in both expanding and strengthening our movements. The work of artists – whether it be visual art, theater, or the stories and characters we connect with through our favorite tv shows and films – has historically been viewed as secondary or supplemental to movement infrastructure, rather than as essential to our work. The reality is that when we invest in and integrate strategies that leverage art, stories, and culture as powerful vehicles for change, we expand what is possible.

Our partners at Southern California Grantmakers are offering this event. Liberation Festival is coming back for the second year! In honor of Juneteenth, SCG is thrilled to once again host this virtual experience showcasing eight Black musicians, dances, rappers, and poets creating works on the themes of Black joy, expression, and excellence. 

What happens when a group of funders come together with the belief that the grant application process should be simpler and less burdensome for grant seekers?

“We are the ones we have been waiting for” is true for almost everything we do in our fight for equity and justice here in the Bay Area and beyond. As we seek to dismantle some of the inequitable and short-sighted funding practices of philanthropy, the same sentiment is true. Many community leaders across Northern California have been calling for a system shift for decades. And now is the time to take action.
