Trans leaders need the spaciousness–many of us understand to be provided by sufficient resourcing–to be able to dream even bigger. As funders, we must understand, now is not the time to center our individual agendas; we cannot focus on single program areas, issues, and strategies, or tepid expansion of portfolios. The Right continues to fund for the long haul, and progressive philanthropy needs to expand our funding and our imagination. If we are working toward equity, we must be steadfast in resourcing trans leaders committed to, and creating long-term strategies for, trans people to live with self-determination and full autonomy.
Resourcing and strengthening our nonprofit ecosystem requires holistic grantmaking and bold innovation. It requires foundations to leverage all of their tools to support organizations in achieving their mission. Working together, we can build a nonprofit ecosystem that has the strength and resilience to win.'
Funding Strategies to Accelerate Power-building Cohort is a new offering within NCG's Communities of Practice. This cohort is a 4-part learning and collaboration series that will help philanthropic grantmakers sharpen their power-building strategies by engaging in 501c(4) funding and complementary 501c(3) funding. A core premise is that these types of grantmaking strategies (which NCG calls “c4- aligned funding”) can accelerate movement building and systems-change goals, strengthen our democracy, and advance racial equity.
Rising sea levels due to climate change have put people, the natural and built environment at severe
risk not only on the California coast, but throughout the state. Flooding affects housing and
transportation infrastructure and rising groundwater releases buried toxics, with disproportionately
impacting low-income communities of color bearing the greatest burden. The price tag to mitigate
these dangers to community and economic wellbeing are staggering, with over $110 Billion projected
for the Bay Area alone.
This anthology archives and documents the cultural memory of health, healing, care and safety practices led by BIPOC, Queer, Trans, migrant, femme, women, sick and disabled communities; and frames these practices as both an organizing and bridge building tool. Page, Woodland and their collaborators demonstrate the connection between healing justice and abolition—in order to build a world without prisons, policing, and criminalization, we need to develop (and fund) long-term infrastructure for health, healing and collective care and safety led by the community.
SAN FRANCISCO – The Youth Power Fund is pleased to announce a total of $870,000 in grants to 29 youth organizing groups in Northern California. The fund was launched in 2019 by foundations and donors that recognize the importance of youth organizing and its role in sustaining a vibrant, inclusive society. To this end, the fund invests in young people of color, particularly young Black and Indigenous leaders, who are creating the world they want to live in by reimagining and transforming communities and systems.
The Bay Area Housing for All regional bond will unlock $10 – 20 billion dollars to build and preserve more than 72,000 affordable homes across 9 Bay Area counties, meeting the urgency and scale of our housing crisis. Over the past few months, the Bay Area Housing Finance Authority (BAHFA) and Association of Bay Area Governments have been holding pivotal public meetings to hear from organizations and community members and inform the bond’s expenditure plans. BAHFA will meet
again on June 26th for their final vote to approve plans and determine whether to place the housing measure on the November 2024 ballot.
