Resources for Pinpointing Vulnerability of COVID-19: Real-Time Safety Net Needs to Support Philanthropy’s Response

Publication date:
April, 2020

The impact of the COVID-19 outbreak is far reaching, including major implications for nonprofits and the communities that they serve. Philanthropy has an important role to play in supporting their non-profit partners during this challenging time in which there will be an increase in demand for their services.

This call focused on two areas of data:

  • A three-county (in the Bay Area) view of near-term COVID-19 economic impacts
  • Social safety net data from 2-1-1 in Northern California

The Boston Consulting Group has recently completed economic analysis of the near-term impacts in three selected Bay Area counties (Alameda, San Francisco, and Santa Clara). The analysis provides funders the opportunities to anticipate who and which sector will continue to be most affected from economic uncertainties. The United Way also shared how data collected from 2-1-1 can help inform local funders, nonprofits, and government agencies on community needs in the Bay Area and surrounding rural communities. 2-1-1 is tracking its services based on location and specific social safety net needs. Data from these sources can support funders with the real-time data to direct resources where it is needed most as we continue to support communities from the socioeconomic fallout of the pandemic.
