Disaster Philanthropy Playbook

The Disaster Philanthropy Playbook is a compilation of philanthropic strategies, best practices, innovative approaches and lessons learned in order to guide the philanthropic community in responding to future disasters. It is designed as an interactive website which your organization can use to personalize your future disaster strategies.

In the hours, days and weeks following a disaster, it can be difficult to decide on the most effective actions philanthropy can take in order to respond, especially if our organizations do not have preparedness plans in place prior to the emergency.

The Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers, which is the largest network serving philanthropy in America, has partnered to create the Playbook, working closely with the two organizations that took a lead role in its development: the Council of New Jersey Grantmakers (CNJG), a Forum member, and the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP).

Create Your Own Playbook

We have organized The Playbook’s information around issues that correspond to many grantmaking areas of focus, such as housing, mental health and wellness, education and others.

The Playbook is a collection of strategies, stories and resources compiled from submissions from grantmakers nationwide, in order to advance learning and understanding of how the philanthropic sector can respond to and, in some cases, lead the recovery in their communities, while implementing the lessons learned and preparedness practices in order to mitigate damage and loss of life should a disaster strike.

This website was designed so that it would be easy for you to pick and choose from the broad scope of its contents, compile relevant strategies, stories and resources into your own Playbook, curate them to suit your objectives, and share them with your network or community.
