There Are No Sidelines
Now what?
I’ve quickly learned over the past 80 days not to ask how this could get any worse. In the current context the answer too often has been ‘just wait for it’. This weekend proved no exception. As I watched $10 trillion of the U.S. economy evaporate in a matter of days, two questions rose to the forefront: what additional pain will our communities experience as a consequence of the latest DC developments, and what can philanthropy do to confront this continuing series of setbacks to democracy, our economy, and civil society?
The multiple assaults on our sense of justice, desire for equitable governance, and belief in basic decency leave most of us personally exhausted and professionally challenged. What we truly value has been laid bare – our families, our communities, a semblance of compassionate society. If this sector was searching for the All Hands moment, we found it.
Our task now is to be the best versions of ourselves. At our best, we can allow space to feel and to grieve, while leaning into action. At our best, we can fulfill the potential of philanthropy to invest in building the equitable future we deserve even when the headwinds are at their strongest.
Our path through the madness is our humanity. I spoke recently with a CEO who reminded us that the integrity ingrained in the values we uphold will guide us through the storm. They are our superpower. They will help us find the strategy, ingenuity, endurance, and creativity that can preserve democracy, protect communities, and build a meaningful vision for an inclusive future.
I’ve seen these values show up as bright spots in the chaos – one is seeing much of the sector spring into action. Another is the field’s network of supporting PSOs doing their thing with recommendations for philanthropy aplenty. And the brightest spot is the coherent organizing and movement work on the ground in communities which is building momentum by the day.
Protect. Defend. Invest. Reinvent.
As we work to uphold our values in our work, consider this four-word guide for foundations seeking direction. Protect vulnerable populations. Defend institutions that uphold democracy. Invest in communities and their leaders. Reinvent our approach to meet shifting conditions.
Becoming Our Vision
I want to invite you just to remember: in this moment there are no sidelines. We’re all incensed, we’re all implicated, and ultimately we’re all impacted (of course some more than others) as we embody and become our vision. You can choose wisely and act. And you don’t have to act alone. If you are in search of how to enhance your good grantmaking and feeling isolated or a bit adrift – find a friend (we can help with that).
But how do we become our vision? Funny you should ask that. Our 2025 Annual Conference takes place Friday, May 2 in San Francisco at the Palace Hotel, and embraces this very question, recognizing that this moment requires us to close the gap between our values and our actions to truly become our shared vision of equity and justice. At their core, visions are born from our deepest desires for the future. What are we needing in this moment? How will that shape your vision? How will we live into our collective vision? Join us to explore the way forward.
If there is a region that can find its way through this maelstrom, it is northern California. When some of the nation’s greatest organizers collaborate with some of the world’s most innovative philanthropy, anything is possible. You’re probably already advancing strategies to meet this moment and they’re probably things you can do that you have yet to explore. That’s where we can support each other. None of us have all the answers, but together this network will find its way.
Here at NCG, it’s increasingly clear to us where we need to lean in to fulfill our mission – keep connecting you, push for bold investment, amplify the effective strategies, pool resources, build cohesion, introduce new players ready to get into the fight, leverage trustee and donor action. Organize for the moment and for the long run.
We will do our part. And if you let us, we will help you do yours.
See you at the Palace.
