NCG members, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, David and Lucile Packard Foundation and Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, along with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have launched their newest Learn Foundation Law course. The free online training on working with government officials guides private foundation staff to stay in compliance with the law. Read the announcement below by the Learn Foundation Law Team:

Sasha Abrams, Deputy General Counsel, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation
Edna Garrett, Assistant General Counsel, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
Megan Jellinek, Assistant General Counsel, David and Lucille Packard Foundation

Mary Anne Rodgers, General Counsel, David and Lucille Packard Foundation
Kristy Tsadick, Associate General Counsel, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation

We are excited to announce the launch of a new Learn Foundation Law course, Working with Government Officials: Rules for Private Foundations. The free, online training is designed to help private foundation staff navigate the often complicated IRS tax rules and ethics rules that surround interactions with government officials.

The course features Maya, the animated program officer who stars in all of the Learn Foundation Law courses. In this training, she guides users through real-life scenarios when a foundation staff member might interact with a government official, including conferences, meetings and site visits. The course also addresses employment issues, including guidelines for when a foundation considers hiring a former government official. For reference, the course offers valuable resources, such as a checklist of questions to consider before working with government officials and summaries of the IRS tax rules and various ethics rules.

The legal staff at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation developed this course and others in the Learn Foundation Law series in order to help foundations and their staff better understand the legal rules in grantmaking. The animated training courses take approximately 30 to 90 minutes to complete.

We encourage you to explore other subjects in the Learn Foundation Law series, including Advocacy and Lobbying Rules for Private Foundations, Electioneering Rules for Private Foundations and Public Charities, Expenditure Responsibility Rules for Private Foundations and Program-Related Investment Rules for Private Foundations. All of these trainings, and a supplemental toolkit to promote them within foundations, are available free of charge at www.learnfoundationlaw.org.
