Hurricane Harvey clean-up has barely begun in Houston, and already it has faded from the headlines. Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Maria, the earthquakes in Mexico, South Asia flooding – all compete for our attention and support. And all are worthy.
Here are three tips to guide you as you determine if and how you will help:
- Look to your mission and values to guide you as you explore different aspects of a disaster: impacts on communities of specific interest to your foundation, such as children, immigrants, and older adults; needs in particular sectors, such as health, housing, and education; and issues which emerge from disasters such as inequity, community displacement, and environmental justice.
- Consider supporting immediate needs and long-term recovery. Although the majority of funding is needed for long-term recovery, most funding targets immediate response and relief efforts.
- Prepare for what may happen here. If you have a wide geographic scope, also plan for how you would support communities around the country or internationally.
