The Y & H Soda Foundation is pleased to announce that Diana Bermúdez has been appointed to serve a five-year term on its Board of Directors. Her career in philanthropy began in 1988 at the Ford Foundation in New York and continued at the Haas Jr. Fund in San Francisco. In l999, Bermúdez opened a consulting practice to assist philanthropic and other nonprofit organizations in their efforts to advance the lives of poor people and to improve the communities in which they live. After consulting for fourteen years, she retired her practice and today manages her family’s real estate properties.
As an independent consultant, Bermúdez assisted foundations with developing and strengthening grantmaking programs. She conducted field reconnaissance and organizational assessments, stakeholder interviews and analysis, and managed capacity building initiatives. In association with other firms, Bermúdez evaluated grantmaking initiatives, explored the state of community foundations in Mexico, and assisted grantees with strategic planning. Her services to nonprofit clients focused on addressing growth, governance and management challenges.
Prior to consulting, Bermúdez was senior program officer at the Ford Foundation responsible for grantmaking in community development. She played a leadership role managing funder collaboratives seeded by the Ford Foundation, as well as in creating new collaboratives in underserved regions. At the Evelyn and Walter Haas Jr. Fund in San Francisco, she funded nonprofit organizations working in the areas of neighborhood improvement, affordable housing, workforce development and food security.
Before entering philanthropy, Bermúdez worked at nonprofit organizations in Oakland in management positions and eventually as Deputy Director. Years earlier, she helped migrant farmworkers in agricultural towns in California obtain education and health services.
She previously served on the boards of the Berkeley Community Fund, Hispanics in Philanthropy, Neighborhood Funders Group, and LeaderSpring, among others. Bermúdez earned a Master Degree in Public Health from the University of California at Berkeley and a Bachelor Degree from the University of California at Santa Cruz.
