California Wellness Foundation Announces New VP of Public Affairs

Foundation’s communications, community relations and public policy functions unite to form comprehensive Public Affairs Department under new leadership.

Richard Tate has been named vice president of public affairs at The California Wellness Foundation, effective March 7. In this new role, Tate will oversee the creation of a new Public Affairs Department at Cal Wellness, which will consolidate the Foundation’s communications, community relations and public policy functions. He will report directly to President and CEO Judy Belk and serve on the Foundation’s senior management team.

“Richard brings to Cal Wellness a wealth of knowledge, skills and passion for our work and the communities we serve,” said Belk. “Under Richard’s leadership, we look forward to leveraging all of the Foundation’s assets in engaging our community partners, policymakers, the media, the private sector and the philanthropic sector in moving the needle on health equity for all Californians.”

Tate said he is excited about the opportunity to further the reach and impact of Cal Wellness’ work. “For more than 20 years, Cal Wellness has worked at the intersection of health and social justice, expanding the definition of wellness for all Californians, specifically for the underserved,” he said. “I find great inspiration in Cal Wellness’ mission and grantmaking, and I am honored to be joining a team of dedicated, passionate professionals at one of our state’s leading health philanthropies. I look forward to working with the new public affairs team to raise awareness and build relationships to maximize the Foundation’s efforts.”

Tate is a seasoned executive with more than 15 years of experience in public relations, marketing and journalism, including leadership positions in health-focused philanthropic and business organizations. He joins Cal Wellness after ten years with HopeLab, the health-focused nonprofit organization of the Omidyar Group and a pioneer in digital health research and development. He was HopeLab’s first director of communications and marketing and advanced to become a vice president and member of the executive leadership team, overseeing all public relations, media outreach and product marketing.
