The bar was set high at last year’s conference. One of the biggest highlights was how we ended the day—a mock debate pitting members against one another. It was fun. It pushed the envelope. And that’s what we wanted to do again this year.
The 2015 NCG Annual Conference will conclude with an interview of socio-political comedian W. Kamau Bell. Named an Ambassador of Racial Justice by the ACLU, his weekly half-hour FX comedy series, Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell, premiered in August 2012 and became a critically acclaimed nightly show in September of 2013 on FX’s new comedy network FXX. The NY Times called Kamau “the most promising new talent in political comedy in many years.” The show was nominated for a 2013 GLAAD Award for “Outstanding Talk Show Episode” for Kamau’s interview with Orange Is the New Black’s Laverne Cox, as well as “Best Talk Series” at the 2012 NAACP Image Awards.
Last month CNN announced that it will launch a new docu-series hosted by Kamau called “United Shades of America” which will look at the different cultures in the United States with provocative humor.
Praised by Punchline Magazine as “one of our nation’s most adept racial commentators with a blistering wit,” Kamau was voted San Francisco’s best comedian by the SF Weekly, the SF Bay Guardian, and 7×7 Magazine.
Needless to say, we’re excited to have Kamau on board. Who better to push the envelope and ask members to think about our conference themes in a new way?
KQED morning newscaster Joshua Johnson will interview Kamau about race, politics and the Bay Area for a fun and edgy end to our annual conference.
