Wednesday, June 18, 2014

Take the Survey by July 18!

Northern California Grantmakers (NCG) is pleased to partner with the Council on Foundations and the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers on the 2014 Grantmakers Salary and Benefits Survey, which collects data on compensation, staff demographics, and benefits costs across a wide range of positions and grantmaking entities, including organizations, federations, and community, private, and public foundations.

NCG is once again using the Council’s online benchmarking tool to generate customized reports for our members once the data is available later this year. All online survey respondents will receive:

  • A PDF copy of the 2014 Salary Tables, which includes compensation summaries for 35 positions by foundation type, region, and asset class
  • Access to online benchmarking, including customized reports on a choice of peer groups
  • A PDF copy of the full 2014 report

More Participation Equals A Better Snapshot of the Field

It is in our mutual best interests to gather as much data as possible so this survey is useful and reflective of the field. With your help, in 2013 the Grantmakers Salary and Benefits Survey had a record number of participants with a 5% increase in valid responses over 2012. We hope to increase participation in 2014 in order to continue to provide this critical resource on fair compensation for the field on multiple organizational levels.

Participate Online

Because the survey is conducted at an organizational level, you will need to designate an appropriate staff person as the survey contact. To request a user account, the survey contact should e-mail the Council’s Research Department ( This e-mail should include the contact’s name, title, and phone number with your organization’s name, type, and address.

Once an account has been established, the survey contact will receive his or her personal log-in information and a link to the survey.

Updates to Survey

The Council has made important updates to the 2014 survey.

First, the survey itself has been retooled and streamlined for a more user-friendly experience.  We have also added a 35th position of Legal Counsel and will be soliciting information on board compensation and consultant services. Unstaffed foundations are now eligible to participate in this new section.

Finally, beginning with the newly released 2013 survey report, the Council will now provide more detailed information and data for the largest foundations, with the inclusion of asset classes for $1 to 1.999 billion and $2 billion and over whenever possible.

Contact the Foundation Center for Assistance

The Council continues to conduct this survey in partnership with the Foundation Center and your primary contact will be a Foundation Center staff person who will answer questions about the survey and user accounts. The Grantmakers Salary and Benefits Survey remains an initiative of the Council, and the data confidentiality and usage policies are unchanged.

The deadline for the survey is July 18, 2014.

This annual survey is one of the most important and effective tools produced for our field and we encourage you to participate.
