From Me to We: Communication Peers Luncheon

When: Tuesday, September 24, 2019 | 12:15 pm - 1:30 pm

Where: The California Endowment | 2000 Franklin Street | Oakland, CA

Join communication peers for an invitation-only lunch with the strategist behind a groundbreaking effort to bring us closer to advancing shared opportunity and prosperity for all Californians. Anat Shenker-Osorio's research and meticulous testing is the secret superpower behind several big progressive policy wins in other states.

Now, a statewide alliance of advocates, community, and faith-based organizations are uniting under a messaging house called the Power of We to mobilize a million new voters and push the first in a series of major fiscal measures to victory. This private lunch will immediately follow a public program on Anat’s groundbreaking research on the Race Class Narrative and a visionary new framework for California.

This first-of-its-kind campaign presents an exciting opportunity for philanthropy to get involved in changing how Californians see ourselves and the transformative potential of a multi-racial and powerful “we”. We will pop the hood for a fascinating and frank look at how Anat's research got us beyond the race and class triggers that foiled past efforts and an intimate discussion with Anat. Anat, Jennifer, and an expert in foundation policy law will be present at the luncheon for further conversation.

Dr. Jennifer Martinez, Chief Strategy Officer, PICO California

Jennifer Martinez is the Chief Strategy Officer for PICO California, the largest faith-based community organizing network in California. PICO CA supports the development and action of grassroots leadership to advocate for racial and economic justice. Jennifer has been an organizer since 2001 where her work has focused on housing justice, immigrant rights, restorative justice and quality education. Today, Jennifer and her team work with dozens of organizations and hundreds of organizers across California to develop long-term strategies that tackle the systemic drivers of racial and economic inequality, including the criminalization of people of color and wealth accumulation into the hands of the few. PICO CA is one of the primary organizations leading the Schools & Communities First ballot initiative, an effort to return $11 Billion a year to local schools and neighborhoods in California.
