This is a full-time exempt level position in Mountain View, California.

Reporting to the Director of Donor Engagement, SVCF is seeking a full-time Philanthropy Advisor to develop trusted partnerships with a portfolio of donors by supporting their journey to become effective philanthropists.  This position facilitates all aspects of donor giving and grantmaking, provides strategic guidance, and stays abreast of philanthropic best practices.  In addition, this position helps raise donor awareness of local community needs by understanding the pressing issues in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.  As an invaluable member of the Donor Engagement team, this position will also contribute to cross-departmental initiatives, including developing and sharing resources to further donor impact.

SVCF is hiring Philanthropic Advisors for two segments within Donor Engagement:

  1. The Philanthropy Team segment includes self-directed donors, donors who haven’t taken advantage of SVCF’s advising services, as well as low activity and inactive funds. This position’s responsibilities will include leading research and outreach efforts to connect with these fundholders to strengthen and grow the relationships.
  2. The Donor Connect segment includes donors who generally desire a collaborative relationship with SVCF and their advising services and are engaged in local philanthropy (though not exclusively). This position requires a deep understanding, or capacity to learn, the issues that communities in need face, and the ability to articulate those issues, and build and maintain strong relationships, with donors.


Manage a portfolio of high net worth donors, cultivating and maintaining meaningful relationships that encourage and inform their charitable giving.

Guide donors in articulating, implementing, and evaluating their philanthropic goals; this includes connecting donors to experts in community issues, planned giving, grantmaking, impact investing, non-profits, funder networks, etc.

Build awareness and financial support for SVCF programs, impact goals, community initiatives; and special events.

Manage a Donor Circle, in collaboration with a team of Philanthropy Advisors.

Collaborate across teams to facilitate fund administration, including the timely processing of gifts and grant recommendations in compliance with relevant regulations.

Develop donor education resources and events that reflect best practices and trends in the field, and are responsive to SVCF priorities, including the needs of low-income communities and communities of color.

Other related duties as assigned.


Bachelor’s degree required; minimum 7 years of experience in philanthropy, donor advisement, non-profit management or related, transferrable experience.

Demonstrated success in building and managing complex client relationships in a fast-paced organization.

Excellent writing, editing, analytical, and oral communication skills including the ability to collect, review, synthesize, and present information and findings.

Ability to multitask and meet deadlines within designated timeframes, as well as demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities for one’s self and a team.

Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail with the ability to work both independently and in a highly collaborative environment. 

Commitment to systemic change and social justice.  Demonstrated experience or knowledge of racial, economic, and social justice or environmental justice issues, including, but not limited to, issues around housing, financial empowerment, education, or climate change mitigation.

Ability to build empathetic and respectful relationships with nonprofit partners in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties.

Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to work with diverse people and in diverse groups.

Capacity to practice empathy and a collaborative mindset that enables authentic, respectful and effective partnerships with colleagues in Donor Engagement and across the organization.

Open to learning new frameworks and thinking critically about improving existing methods or approaches.

Fluency with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems.

Strong software skills in Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook. 

Ability to thrive in a rapidly shifting and evolving workplace.
