Reporting to the VP of Silicon Valley Programs, the Director – Thriving Communities will lead the overall staff, program and budget management, strategy design and implementation for holistic, multi-generational economic mobility approaches in East/Downtown San Jose and Redwood City/North Fair Oaks. This role is critical to our goal of strengthening paths to economic opportunity to increase financial security, well-being, and community cohesion in Silicon Valley.
This role will be a key member of the SP Leadership team and support leadership in developing programmatic, grantmaking, and nonprofit center activation goals, workplans, and managing cross-organizational approaches to building team culture and cohesion. The Director will provide written communication for the senior leadership, executive leadership and Board on the progress and impact of this portfolio. This candidate will center equity and community voice; enjoy taking creative approaches; have excellent listening skills and be able to translate communications into written and spoken messages that are succinct and effective.
Responsibilities and Tasks
Job Responsibility 1: Program Design, Implementation, Learning and Refinement
% of Time: 25
- Holds the overall economic mobility, multi-generational strategy development, implementation, and refinement in East/Downtown San Jose and Redwood City/North Fair Oaks.
- Aligns program design and implementation with community engagement, monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL), communications, finance, and operations.
- Provides leadership for the SV Program in line with SP’s vision for impact and stewarding resources towards that vision.
- Provides oversight of the grants pipeline and ensure alignment with strategy.
- Builds partnerships across the organization and to advance SP vision of an integrated, collaborative approach to grantmaking, grants management, MEL, and capacity building.
- Advances strategy, evaluation, and learning priorities.
Job Responsibility 2: Grantmaking, Community Engagement & Space Activation
% of Time: 30
- Oversees and executes portfolio grantmaking, ensuring the team’s due diligence and relationship management.
- Builds and monitor the place-based grantmaking budget.
- Reviews grant recommendations and Board-facing deliverables; manages workflows in Fluxx and other systems.
- Oversees overall community engagement strategy implementation.
- Oversees overall center activation at the San Jose and Redwood City centers.
- Supports activation activities as part of the team.
Job Responsibility 3: Division Management and Communications
% of Time: 25
- Manages team including providing thought partnership, guidance, and decision-making support.
- Supports senior leadership in developing programmatic and grantmaking goals and workplans, and managing cross-organizational initiatives.
- Leads in the design of and manage the place-based budget.
- Develops docket and Board-facing communications, updates, and reports; supports engagement and reporting in alignment with Board priorities and VP direction.
Job Responsibility 4: Relationship and Network Building
% of Time: 15
- Cultivates and manage relationships with nonprofits, philanthropic partners, consulting partners, and other key stakeholders landscape to keep abreast of local trends, leverage peer learning and drive program outcomes.
- Leads and serve on local committees that galvanize and engage other funders to contribute to the goals of the program.
- Represents Sobrato Philanthropies to various constituencies, including in outside conferences and meetings.

Qualifications (Know How)
Education / Training
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent combination of education and work experience in the philanthropic, nonprofit, education, and/or public sector.
- 10-years experience philanthropy, public or the nonprofit sector that demonstrates a deep knowledge and track record in developing and expanding innovative programming related to a geographic place and its people.
- Experience in program design, planning and implementation.
- Experience demonstrating program impact by aligning implementation with monitoring, evaluation, and learning.
- Ability to invest grant funds and other resources, including nonprofit space, strategically and with high accountability.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
- Track record in community development, community engagement, community building or community organizing, understanding how to embed community voice, lived experience, and diversity, equity and inclusion in recommendations.
- Experience using Fluxx Grants Management Software ad Yardi
- Familiarity with priority communities within the Silicon Valley region
- Ability to drive key deliverables effectively and efficiently.
- Ability to be proactive and constantly prioritize responsibilities in a fast-moving and rapidly changing environment.
- Works well independently and within a team, demonstrating great initiative, flexibility, and collaboration.
- Exercises good judgment.

- Senior Program Officer- Redwood City
Work Schedule: This position is based out of 599 Castro St, in office Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Hybrid on Wednesdays and Fridays. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
The annual base salary range for full-time employees for this position is below. Please note that base pay may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
· $190,000 - $245,000 USD
