Join us for the next California Criminal Justice Funders Group (CCJFG) Program Transformative Prison Work in California Criminal Justice Reform. This program will be in-person or, for those unable to come in person, it will be available by webinar as well. Lunch will be served.

Join Sohrob Nabatian from Kalliopeia Foundation and a panel of field leaders who are creating a statewide coalition of providers of transformative rehabilitative programming in California’s 35 prisons.  These programs focus on transformational rather than transactional methods of rehabilitation that change lives and prison cultures, giving CA’s 131,320 incarcerated people tools to successfully face their predicament and to learn the skills ‘to not only get out but stay out’.

As a critical part of successful re-entry and culture change, transformative prison work plays a key role in wider criminal justice reform. Quality rehabilitative programming directly meets the layered needs of this multi-ethnic incarcerated population by creating humanizing spaces, providing long-term healing programs, educational opportunities, re-entry preparation, increasing contact with people from outside communities, and a renewed emphasis on rehabilitation within CDCR.

Once marginalized in rehabilitation work in CA, transformative program providers have emerged as catalysts for change in the CDCR and beyond, and are organizing to respond to new legislative opportunities. Please join us for an update on this field and to hear about an emerging statewide network of transformative prison providers in CA who are organizing to share information and to work collectively for long term change.

Our featured panel speakers are key leaders in the emerging coalition of Transformative Prison Work providers:

  • Jacques Verduin, Director Insight-Out

  • Emiliano Lopez, GRIP Program Facilitator & Prison Reform Advocate at Anti-Recidivism Coalition

  • Karena Montag, Programs Director & Clinical Supervisor, Insight Prison Program

  • Phil Melendez, Formerly Incarcerated Facilitator, Insight Prison Project

  • Moderated by Sohrob Nabatian, program officer at Kalliopeia Foundation

Please RSVP by October 18th.
