For many immigrant and refugee families in the United States, schools serve as trusted entities—and this role has only been amplified in recent years. Since 2016, California’s Pre-K-12 schools have been grappling with how to provide a safe and inclusive learning environment for students impacted by a marked increase in xenophobic rhetoric, stepped up immigration enforcement activities, and other policy developments that effect their ability to thrive. While some students have experienced bullying, harassment, and intimidation at school, many have received new levels of support from teachers, counselors, administrators, and others. Given current threats and opportunities facing immigrant students and families, philanthropy has a critical role to play in ensuring that educators and community-based organizations are equipped to respond their unique needs.
Join Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees (GCIR) and our co-sponsors for a special funders’ briefing on efforts to support immigrant and refugee students in California through a collaboration between Californians Together, Immigrant Legal Resource Center, and GCIR. This year-long partnership sought to identify and curate key resources for school administrators and educators; develop grade-specific classroom training curricula; and engage a wide range of stakeholders—including funders—to advance protective and culturally relevant policies and practices for the long term. Participants will hear directly from school officials who are actively seeking to address the needs of immigrant and refugee students and families, as well as aligned efforts to advance a coordinated statewide approach to serving this population.
