Join us for a moving, illuminating and powerful kick-off to philanthropy’s newest affinity group: Parents in Philanthropy.

PiP started when a few moms kept running into each other at philanthropy events and realized that while we shared a lot of the same values, visions and challenges in our work, there were few places to talk and be “real” about the juggling act required to support both social change and little changemakers.

This kick-off event, appropriately, starts at the very beginning: at birth. In the U.S. today, 1 in 4 moms have no choice but to return to work just two weeks after the birth of a child. 87% of parents have no access to paid leave through their employers. Many parents are having to choose between leaving their baby before they are ready, and making ends meet.

Join Katie Bethell, founder of PL+US, to hear her share her efforts to change current policy on paid family leave. And, while doing so, telling a different kind of story —one that values families, and that reflects the diverse communities we come from and support.

Agenda

11:00 am -12:00 noon:
Presentation and conversation with guest speaker, Kate Bethell

12:00 noon - 1:00 pm:
Brainstorm future topics for the PIP network (30 min) and networking lunch (30 min)

Speaker

Katie Bethell is a senior leader and organizer with nearly 15 years of digital advocacy and mobilization experience. She was the Campaign Director at MomsRising.org for four years, where, as a member of the founding team and active participant in national and state coalitions on work/family policy, Katie developed and won local, state, and national campaigns for family-friendly public policy. Her portfolio included work to win passage of statewide paid family leave in New Jersey and Washington State, paid sick days legislation in Connecticut, and the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.
