It Takes a Village: Funders Uniting for Immigrant Children & Youth

“It takes a village to raise a child” is a famous proverb we often reference to communicate that it takes an entire community of people to ensure the growth and success of children. In California, nearly 50% of all children in the state have at least one immigrant parent,  and 1 in 5 children are a part of mixed status families. California is also home to over 86,000 undocumented students in higher education. These young people are facing fear, stress, trauma, and worry with the unknown of the current administration's attacks on their village and communities. This moment calls for philanthropy to step into the collective responsibility in protecting, defending, and supporting them.

Regionally, Northern California holds some of the highest numbers of immigrants in the nation. As a central part of our vibrant communities, they are navigating increased enforcement actions, hostile narratives, and misinformation in their daily life. These stressors have immediate and long-term impacts on their ability to learn, grow, and thrive.

Schools and youth serving organizations are stepping up more than ever to be sure the village surrounding immigrant youth is stable. Though, they are faced with navigating this challenging environment while adapting to create safe spaces for learning. While some infrastructure is in place, more support is needed to address the trauma young people, families, and staff are experiencing.

This moment calls for all funders working at the intersection of children, youth and families to discuss the impacts of immigration policies in this moment and explore how we can ensure California’s youth are supported.

Join us for an engaging interactive session to:

  • Learn how immigration impacts are showing up for children and youth at all stages of education – from early childhood to higher education.
  • Hear how schools, youth serving organizations and their staff are being impacted and what the needs are.
  • Explore how funders can ensure youth success, safety, and growth and work collaboratively to address these issues.
