This webinar is presented by the California Criminal Justice Funders Group.

Earlier this year, Governor Newsom declared a moratorium on all executions in California. In the wake of this decision, a new statewide coalition was formed to leverage this momentum and to forge new partnerships in the movement to end excessive sentencing. This webinar will explore how ending excessive sentencing and extreme punishments can advance abolition of the death penalty and reduce or eliminate the use of Life Without Parole (LWOP) and other harsh sentences.

Participants will discuss plans to leverage recently passed legislation on juvenile parole, felony murder, and case settlement in death penalty and LWOP cases, as well as its plans to introduce a Racial Justice Act bill, which seeks to eliminate racial bias in capital and non-capital cases. Participants will share personal experience of incarceration and lessons learned from other states engaged in similar struggles. Finally, increased organizing and advocacy at the local level is having an impact on charging practices around the state. Participants will discuss opportunities created by upcoming and recent elections and share the impact that death row exonerees and other programs are having on local prosecutors offices, including in San Joaquin and Santa Clara counties.
