This two-part member meeting series will address how funders can sustain long-term statewide policy work, while being accountable to local grassroots movements. We will consider the following questions: what is our role to not only fund statewide grass-tops organizations and coalitions, but to also sustain local work of leadership development within grassroots, regional organizations? How do we develop strategies that focus on both support for coalitions that advocate for necessary policy change and providing support for the infrastructure of organizations that make up these coalitions?

This discussion will be organized through two different meetings:

Friday, August 20th: We will introduce the framework and focus on current funding strategies that demonstrate this dual approach to sustaining statewide and local work. We will learn from Sabina Gonzalez-Erana, Program Manager with The California Endowment about her years of organizing and funding in Fresno County and the Central Valley. Register here.

Friday, September 17th: We will break out into groups focused on underfunded regions (Central Valley, Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties, and the Central Coast) to learn about the organizing and funding landscape from funders deeply engaged in these areas, and share tools in which to implement funding.

Speakers

  • Sergio Cuellar, San Joaquin Valley Health Fund
  • Vera deVera, Weingart Foundation
  • Marcos Vargas, Fund for Santa Barbara
  • Claudia Armann, McCune Foundation

We’d love for you to join us for both sessions; and you are welcome to join any meeting that your schedule permits. These meetings are only for California criminal justice funders who are interested in coordinating, aligning, and sharing information with other funders.

Please contact CACriminalJusticeFunders@ncg.org with suggestions for topics, including your questions, requests for support, and/or funder initiatives you’d like to learn more about.
