The future of philanthropy lies in the hands of emerging leaders. In the Rising Leaders Cohort, our intention is to support the individuals who have a deep-seated passion for their own effectiveness in their work, and the effectiveness of the field as well.

The curriculum follows four main threads:
  • Emotional intelligence and leadership development
  • “Hard” skills development
  • Equity, inclusion, identity, and power
  • Career development

This Session Will Feature:

  • The goals and outcomes of the Rising Leaders Cohort
  • An overview of the program structure, curriculum, timeline, and application process
  • Testimonials and experiences from alumni
  • A Q&A session with RLC faculty, staff, and alumni

Target Audience

The Rising Leaders Cohort is designed for individuals who are newer in their careers, ideally with under 8 years of working experience in the social change fields. The information session will feature four alumni from the inaugural 2020 cohort.

Speakers

Jenny Chan, Program Associate, van Loben Sels/RembeRock Foundation
Jenny Chan is a Program Associate at van Loben Sels/RembeRockFoundation where she plays both a programmatic and operational role as part of a tiny staff of two. She manages the Foundation's grants management system and communications and supports all aspects of due diligence review and grantmaking in legal services, the Foundation's primary focus. Previously, Jenny has spent time working as a grant seeker, working in the private sector, creating visual art, and doing various performing arts. Jenny was born and raised in Hong Kong and has lived in Houston, Texas, where she earned her bachelor's degree in sociology from Rice University. She currently lives in Oakland.
 
 
Jodie Clark, Program Associate, William and Flora Hewlett Foundation
Jodie Clark is a Program Associate in Global Development and Population at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. She supports grantmaking that aims to increase transparency, participation, and accountability between governments and citizens, and increase the use of evidence in policy decisions that affect developing countries. Previously, she was a program associate at Packard Foundation’s population and reproductive health care program where she focused on sub-Saharan Africa. Prior to that, she was the program and operations manager at the Rockin’ Appalachian Mom Project, a Connecticut-based organization dedicated to responding to nutrition, economic development, and emergency relief needs among children and families in Martin County, Kentucky. While pursuing graduate studies, Jodie supported a research initiative led by the International Water Management Institute to identify effective small-scale irrigation solutions in Zambia, and worked with Oxfam International to research new methods for evaluating women’s rights and gender equity programs. Born in the Bay Area and raised in Hawaii, Jodie has a bachelor’s degree in legal studies from Bates College in Maine and a master’s degree in sustainable international development from Brandeis University.
 
Victoria Nichols, Program Manager, Policy Connect at Tides

Victoria Nichols (she/her) serves as the Program Manager for Policy Connect, an initiative of Tides. With a background in health systems transformation and a passion for equity and innovation, she has focused her career on efforts that aim to redesign policies, structures, and systems to meet diverse needs. Prior to joining Tides, Victoria supported various non-profit organizations in work related to advancing innovative primary prevention healthcare models, assessing the childcare needs of families experiencing homelessness, and democratizing access to information on reproductive health technologies. Victoria earned her Master's degree in Public Health focused on Health Policy and Management from the University of California, Berkeley and holds a BA in Philosophy and Government from Claremont McKenna College. She continues to seek new opportunities to exchange learnings and gain insight from peers, colleagues, and communities with lived experience.  

 
Victoria Rodarte, Program Associate, Evelyn, and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund
Victoria is the immigrant rights and education equity program associate at the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund. In her role at the Fund, she partners with program directors and grantees on key initiatives and grantmaking. Victoria is also on the Bay Area steering committee of Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy (EPIP), which engages the early-to mid-career staff of philanthropic organizations in networking and skills-building events. Her work is driven by a commitment to racial equity and a desire to see the needs of immigrant and underrepresented communities addressed in our political system. Victoria is a first-gen college graduate and holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California, Berkeley. She is originally from Bell Gardens (in Los Angeles County) and has now lived in the Bay Area for a decade.
 
Kate Seely, Leadership, Culture, and Community Senior Director, Northern California Grantmakers (moderator)
Kate is the Director of Leadership, Culture, and Community. In this role, she directs NCG’s professional and leadership development work, and guides our focus on organizational culture as a leverage point for impact. Before working in philanthropy, Kate co-founded the nonprofit Puente a la Salud Comunitaria in Oaxaca, Mexico, a community development organization focused on public health, economic development, and sustainable agriculture. She proudly chairs the board there and serves on the board of her amazing summer camp, the Bar 717 Ranch, and the nonprofit NewStories. She spent a transformative year completing a Master's in Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability, where she deepened her own understanding of the type of leadership and organizational culture that is needed to achieve both environmental and social sustainability. In her life beyond work, she loves farms, farmers, cooking, eating, canning, community, nature, hiking, and backpacking, and her two-year old niece, who consistently reminds her to be present in the current moment.
