I found myself, one day, along with my colleague Anjee Helstrup-Alvarez, now the ED of MACLA, facing a nine-month delay for a significant grant that supported the work. MACLA was subsidizing the work with no funds. The intermediary was not delivering the grant on time, nor did it seem it was going to be delivered on time in spite of repeated efforts to collect the grant funds. I became aware of the Arts Loan Fund (ALF) and after some difficult deliberation, applied.

The Kenneth Rainin Foundation announced $3 million in additional funding for the Community Arts Stabilization Trust (CAST), a game-changing organization that protects San Francisco Bay Area arts and cultural organizations from displacement. This three-year grant will help CAST realize an ambitious goal to acquire 100,000 square feet of space for arts groups by the end of 2018.

Last year the Arts Loan Fund embarked on a journey to better serve the needs of the arts community. We learned that despite thirty years of loans and continuing cash-flow struggles for arts organizations, the ALF is not widely known in the arts community, and its website and application needed a face-lift.
